The Salem Folklore Community continues their First Thursdays Community Dance series in 2023. They will hold their next dance from 6:30 to 9:00 at the VFW Hall (630 Hood St. NE). Masks and vaccinations recommended, but not required. They hope to create a welcoming atmosphere for both new and experienced dancers, with circles, squares, and contras designed to foster success and fun for all.
Music: Tim Crosby on fiddle, Kathy Crosby on bass, Shawn Morford on piano. Calling: Jana Rygas
Admission is on a sliding scale, $5-10 per person, cash only at the door.
Newcomer session at 6 pm
Dancing 6:30-9:00 pm

Contra Remix is back, with caller and DJ Noah Grunzweig!
This is a queer loving space that supports the expression, exploration, and rejection of gender & sex identities. The terms used to identify partnered positioning in our dance are Larks and Robins.
Community welcome and newcomers' lesson at 6:30; dance 7-10
Admission: $6-$20 sliding scale
Location: Norse Hall, upstairs - 111 NE 11th Ave, Portland

The Portland Contra Committee meets (usually) on 2nd Monday's to support the needs of Contra dance events and dancers.

Contra dance tunes taught by ear. All melody instruments, all levels welcome! No cost to participants!
We meet the 2nd Thursday of each month to learn tunes by George Penk or Betsy Branch, alternating between SW and SE Portland. The focus is on developing a common repertoire to play by ear at 5th Sat. Open Band and at community jam sessions. Repeated monthly schedule through Spring:

(PCDC 2nd Saturday Contra: Chicken Feathers [Seattle] w/Ric Goldman)
Our Saturday night series at Fulton Hall continues! Chicken Feathers (Laurie Andres, Bonnie Zahnow, & W.B. Reid) will head down from Seattle to make music for us. Ric Goldman will call dances using gender-neutral terms.
