Thu Mar 2, 2023The Salem Folklore Community continues their First Thursdays Community Dance series in 2023. They will hold their next dance on Thursday March 2, from 6:30 to 9:00 at the VFW Hall (630 Hood St. NE). George Penk, Heather Pinney, and friends will play music for the evening. Jana Rygas will call the dances using gender-neutral terms. Masks are required and vaccinations recommended. They hope to create a welcoming atmosphere for both new and experienced dancers, with circles, squares, and contras designed to foster success and fun for all.
Admission is on a sliding scale, $5-10 per person.
Newcomer session at 6 pm
Dancing 6:30-9:00 pm

This is a queer loving space that supports the expression, exploration, and rejection of gender & sex identities. The terms used to identify partnered positioning in our dance are Larks and Robins.
Community welcome and newcomers' lesson at 6:30; dance 7-10

For the first time since 2019, The Portland Megaband will play for a dance in Portland! This band typically includes over 70 musicians. Three of our local callers (Laurel Thomas, Rich Goss, and William Watson) will call using gender-neutral terms. All folks must be vaxxed, boosted, and masked.Music: The Portland Megaband--a contra dance orchestra of 60+ musiciansCallers: Laurel Thomas, Rich Goss, William WatsonVenue: The historic Oaks Park Dance Pavilion with a beautiful wood floor, excellent ventilation, and good acousticsDance: 7:30 - 10:45; Newcomers' session at 7:00.
